Biography

Jharana Das was a prominent Indian actress, journalist, broadcaster, and trained classical dancer, best known for her immense contributions to the Odia film industry, also known as Ollywood. Blazing a trail in the world of regional cinema, she left an indelible mark through her multifaceted career and powerful on-screen presence. Das began her professional journey in the 1960s as a child artist and announcer for All India Radio in Cuttack, where she produced diverse and creative content encompassing drama, music, and film. Her early dedication to her craft was further honed by specialized voice culture training in Kolkata, which later brought a unique depth to her film performances. Choosing a career in entertainment was a bold move at the time, and Das faced significant family opposition when she decided to pursue acting. It was ultimately her brother, who served in the Indian Air Force, who stepped in to convince their family to let her follow her true calling. Parallel to her radio work, Das established a distinguished career in television broadcasting, eventually serving as the Assistant Station Director of Doordarshan in Cuttack. When she transitioned to acting in cinema, she quickly became a celebrated leading lady, appearing in approximately forty films as the female lead. She delivered critically acclaimed and memorable performances in several classic Odia films, including Amadu Bata, Bari, Sri Jagannath, Adina Megha, Abhinetri, Hisab Nikas, Pujafula, Heera Nella, and Malajanha, the latter of which featured her husband working... as the cameraman. Beyond acting, Das also stepped behind the camera to direct a biographical documentary film about Harekrushna Mahatab, a prominent Indian freedom fighter and former Chief Minister of Odisha. Her dedication to the arts earned her numerous accolades throughout her life. Her most notable honors include the Jaydev Puraskar in 1977, awarded for her lifetime contribution to cinema, and the prestigious Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award in 2016, which recognized her lifetime achievement in the arts. Jharana Das passed away at her residence in Cuttack on December 2, 2022. Her death was deeply mourned across the nation and recognized by the highest offices in India. The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, acknowledged her passing, while Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed deep grief over the loss of the legendary actress. In honor of her immense contributions to the state's cultural heritage, Patnaik announced that her last rites would be performed with full state honors, noting in his tribute that her impactful performances on stage and film would always be remembered.
