Biography

Matyoqub Matchonov (born November 26, 1956, in Tashkent, USSR) is an Uzbek theater and film actor, recognized as one of the most respected figures in Uzbek cinema and performing arts. Inspired by a dream of becoming an actor, Matchonov entered the Tashkent Theater and Art Institute after finishing school. He made his film debut in 1980 with Dahoning yoshligi (The Youth of a Genius). After completing his studies, he began his professional theater career in 1985 at the Young Guard Theater. Matchonov gained nationwide recognition for his role in Bozor ko‘rmagan yigit, which established him as a gifted comedic performer and brought him popularity among audiences. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated versatility across comedy, drama, and various cinematic genres, becoming known for his natural acting style and memorable characters. He has continued to be an important presence in Uzbek cinema, including his role in Sarvar Karimov’s drama film Farz (2025), where he appeared among the main cast alongside Tohir Saidov and Sayyora Yunusova. Beyond his acting career, Matchonov has contributed to the development of Uzbek cinema as the chairman of the Creative Union of Cinematographers of Uzbekistan. He is a recipient of the Order of Friendship and the honorary title of People's Artist of Uzbekistan.
